So you don’t have time to study Japanese?

How much time do you spend in the toilet? Oops, maybe too personal 😉

Ok, bear with me here, I have a point…

When you are there, ahem, doing what needs to be done, you might have a few minutes of “contemplation time”. I’m not suggesting that you take your textbooks in there with you, but I am suggesting thinking about Japanese…

Think about Japanese

Here are some suggestions, let me know in the comments if they help you:

  • If it is your own home, put some vocabulary lists up on the toilet walls, on the mirror, above the toilet paper. Your eyes will naturally seek out reading material and you will find yourself learning words with each “visit”.
  • Label items in the bathroom with their Japanese name.
  • If it is not your home, look around the toilet/bathroom and try to name the objects that you see. Do you know the word for soap? Hand towel? Sink? If you don’t, look them up now and try to recall them on your next visit.

You don’t have to Study Japanese…Let’s pretend

I am always thinking about ways to integrate Japanese into daily life. I like to pretend that I am in Japan. In Japan, you see and hear the language all the time. Well, we have mobile phones and a gazillion apps to look at to learn Japanese. You also have headphones, right? Surround yourself with the sounds of Japan.

I believe that the more you come across Japanese language the more you will take it in and the more fluent you will become. Think about it…how do you spend your day? Think about all that in-between time. Plus it is usually free!

No time to study Japanese? Look at all that Lost time

Here is an example:

How do you get to school/college/work?

Go by car? Walk? Take the bus? Listen to a Japanese podcast and repeat the words as they are said – I suspect that many people will think that you are having a phone conversation. OK, mouth the words soundlessly if you are self-conscious ;-). So you don’t like listening to people talk? So, how about music? Listen to a Japanese singer enough times and you will begin to learn the words in the songs, you may even start to sing along, plus you will amaze people at your next karaoke session!

Here is my early blog for more tips.

The aim is to think that you are in Japan and surround yourself with the sounds and imagery and then you have the immersion experience! All you need next is to practice your Japanese!
