Does this sound familiar?
- I am trying to work out where my efforts are best focused.
- I didn’t have many things I can read to get that sense of achievement to keep me going.
- I can’t find any resources that kept me entertained.
- I have tried to talk to Japanese people over the internet but they usually wanted to talk in English.
I am trying to work out where my efforts are best focused. WHY are you studying Japanese? What do you want to do with your language skills once acquired? Try looking into the future and imagine yourself and the progress you have made. What are you proud of having achieved in your Japanese language studies. Do you hold N1? Are you working in Japan for a Japanese company? Are you able to easily communicate with your Japanese spouse? Are you chatting to your child in Japanese in order to encourage them into bilingualism or multilingualism? If you focus on where you want to be…on your language goals, the focus point for your efforts will become clear.
I don’t have many things I can read to get that sense of achievement to keep me going. So you need reading material for your level? Have you joined our Japanese Language Facebook group? There are plenty of people online and all geared towards different levels. You can read and converse with people from all around the world to keep yourself challenged, with members sharing new content every day. Here is the link to our group: Nihongo Connection 🙂
I can’t find any resources that keep me entertained. Have you considered social media? You can easily find an account that appeals to you. It is a fantastic resource and there are so many Japanese speakers using each social media platform! Did you know that the most popular platform in Japan is Twitter? You should definitely get in on the act! Tweets are short manageable bite-sized portions of Japanese for that quick fix. You can study on Twitter as you wait for your dinner to cook, or as you wait for your friend at the coffee shop.
Have you tried to talk to Japanese people over the internet but they usually wanted to talk in English? If this happens to you, you are visiting the wrong sites, connecting with the wrong groups or following the wrong accounts. I communicate with several Native Japanese speakers every day – in Japanese! No one switches to English and everyone corrects my mistakes and suggests alternative or more suitable language for me to use. The absolute best part? Social Media is all totally free! If you are not sure where to start using Social Media to learn Japanese, why not get my tips, HERE. Happy Benkyou!
