Kanji.
Is.
Hard.
You just have to study.
Did you know that the Japanese Ministry of Education developed and issued a list called 学年別漢字配当表 (がくねんべつ かんじ はいとう ひょう) or “list of Kanji divided per school year,” which is comprised of 1,006 characters and their associated readings. This list prescribes the kanji and the readings which should be taught, as well as when they should be taught to Japanese school children over the course of primary school. Yes, Primary School children know over 1,000 characters by the time they finish school!!!! We have a lot of catching up to do!
The good news is that there are lots of resources out there to help you, whichever way you prefer to learn.
Here is a run down of a few helpful resources. Most of these five below are for beginners:
If you learn best by writing kanji over and over and over and…
If you are more of a Flashcard kinda learner.
Do you need visual stimuli and pictographs?
Do you want something that you can use over and over again?
Of course, once you reach the intermediate level you could always read a book. This one by Tom Gally Gives each page in Japanese and English plus a commentary to help you to break down the grammar points.
If you want everything on your mobile phone or iPad for studying, have you looked up eBooks or Kindle books?
The books below give a sentence-by-sentence break-down for ease of studying.
