After the JLPT

Taking the JLPT is a great test of skills and endurance! I have mentioned before here how I found the exam exhausting!

I have heard a few people from various JLPT levels complain that the listening was “hard”, “…erm, interesting…” and “I couldn’t focus anymore”. Yes, the listening section is tough, it is at the end of the test when you are already fatigued, and that is what makes it so hard to focus! It is also a long time to listen to a foreign language, think how hard you brain is working!

My listening skills are my best Japanese skill, yet I also struggle in the JLPT, by the time we are at the listening section my brain is fried!

Why is listening my best skill?

I love surrounding myself with the Japanese language. I listen to Japanese speakers every day. I download listening materials from JapanesePod101 and I listen to repeats of the same lesson until I can almost recite it myself. Outside of work, I am usually on my feet and walking around and what better time to have some Japanese playing in the headphones, as I make my way to my destination. Tonight I was on my way to meet a friend for dinner (at a Japanese restaurant). So I listened to a JPod101 Japanese lesson. It was a 50 minute walk and so I listened to Japanese for 40 minutes: a repeat of the lesson as the lesson was less than 20 minutes. Then I recorded the video below:

If you want to practice more listening, why not try JapanesePod101 and our Online Conversation Club. We would love to see you there!
