My Japanese is s***!
I may have blocked out the word but I am sure that you know what I have written.
I have heard people say this and I have said this in the past about my own Japanese Language ability and what I realised is … this is not helpful to say! It is not helpful to you. Not helpful for others to hear. Who is it helping? No one, so let’s just stop saying these things!
Instead, replace it with…
“I am a * rockstar! I am learning Japanese!” (*insert desired word here) š
Why say “I am a * rockstar! I am learning Japanese!”Ā ?
Firstly, Japanese is at least the second language that you know, (to some degree!) How cool is that! A second language! Most people only have one!
Cut yourself some slack! Feel good about yourself!
Secondly, people are impressed! Seriously, they are!

Source 2 – This writer will give you a pat on the back for learning Japanese!
Source 3 – You are a legend! Look how hard, over how many hours, you work!

I bet you do!
So the next time you start feeling down about your level of Japanese, do the following:
- Remember WHY you started studying Japanese – the chances are, this is still your WHY
- Look at WHERE you were in the beginning of your studies – how far have you come?
- Revisit your WINS since the start – In Japanese, you can order a beer!!!!! THIS is important! (Drink responsibly and only if you are old enough to do so!!!)
- Think about the end GOAL – Look into your future of Japanese speaking…what do you see?
