Have you heard of Ikigai? Iki is live and gai is reason.
It is the Japanese philosophy of focusing on your life purpose, being mindful of the small thing and enjoying your time spent day-to-day.
It is the idea of having interests outside of work, something that totally absorbs you and you enjoy, in which you take pride. You can have many ikigai and they can be a basic as you would like.
For you and me you can guess that our one shared ikigai is the Japanese language. Ikigai is what keeps us healthy and happy and keeps the Okinawan centenarians clocking-up over 100 years of age.
What do you enjoy day-to-day that gives you a boost and makes your day enjoyable?
Let’s make a list. First, think what they are in English.
Let’s make a list of your top five ikigai written in Japanese…
1. The sound of my cats purring as I wake up in the morning –
2. The relaxing feeling of standing under a hot shower
3. The coffee flavoured kiss from my partner as he goes to work 彼氏のコーヒー味キス
4. The sound of the rain outside whilst I am cozy and warm in my home
5. Folding some pretty patterned paper into a beautiful origami creation
Now I have not checked this Japanese (above) with a teacher, so they a bound to be incorrect…that is why I am sharing them…so that I can get them corrected and learn from that correction! 🙂
UPDATED:
My Japanese writing in the post has been corrected for me by lovely native Japanese teachers and here are two versions:
The reason I ended the sentence with noun is you started the paragraph by saying “my いきがい”.
So all the sentences can be followed “が私のいきがいです。”.
For example,
