What is the JLPT? Are you taking the JLPT. Have you previously taken the JLPT?

Are you thinking about taking the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) but not sure if you should?

Well before I go any further, you should know when registration closes so that you know how long you have to make a decision!

Let’s get this over with first…

Can you afford the test fee? That is pretty important.

Check out this page to search for your local test centre and related costs. Once you know the answer to this question you will know whether to read on!

You may have a few different worries about making your decision. Let’s look at your reason for considering the test.

Why do you want to take the test?

Is your reason personal or professional?

Are you interested in your current level? Do you collect certificates? Are you driven to study by an end goal, a deadline? Are you driven by the money spent on the test fee? Are you needing to achieve a particular level of the JLPT for a job application?

Whatever your reason, start with that reason and go deeper…depending on the importance of your reason, that will help you to decide.

Next…

Have you worked out what you will use to study to take you where you need to go? How many hours a week do you need to have available?

Pushing for a level too far away from your current one will cause you a lot of stress, believe me! I have done it to myself and it is not fun. You might even make yourself unwell and unable to attend the test!…do you want to put that pressure on yourself? Maybe you thrive on the pressure, only you know what works best for you.

If you have considered these points and you are going to give it a go, congratulations and good luck!
